eyes wide shut, lips forced open
your mouth to a silent scream
trapped in your lungs  by rough hands
that touch but do not
feel you tremor as you count
seconds until you run
away from yourself and this moment
in a temple set on
fire.

fly past arms that hold arms
pointed at your wings
that have melted in the sun,
worn down by “gods”
that would shove you deep
into the earth and bury your rage
against that heavy silence
that threatens to suffocate you in your
sleep.

Scars sewn shut, legs unsteady.
Open your eyes, then

breathe
